April 1st, 2007: Worthing 20 Report
Posted by Chris Phelan at 7:58 pmRead Peter Emery’s report on the Worthing 20 below:
There were at least six from SLH braving the gales at Worthing this morning. The temperature before the start seemed cool but it was actually ideal. Less so was the wind that blew into the runners faces all along the front and at various other times on the course. I’m no meteorologist, but it appeared to be a northerly wind, so it gusted you at every junction!
First home for the Club, and (I think) ninth overall was Andy Davies, aka Dave Baker. He ran around 2h 7m, though all these places and times are from memory, so will be corrected.
He and the recently shawn Andrew Aitken both started strongly and were sixth and seventh early on. Andrew slowed, went off course and was suffering but still finished twelfth in around 2h 9m. He was disappointed that this was slower than his recent Finchley time.
I was next in, 59th and 2h 20m, having gone through half in 1h 9m 21s. I did get some satisfaction from overtaking a Portsmouth runner in the last mile and knocking four minutes off last year’s time.
Behind me was a bit of a tussle, with Clare Settle (who to be fair was using it as a training run) overtaking Colin Young in the last couple of miles and beating him by half a minute or so. They both ran around 2h 35m.
Chris Costiff, after a bug and 450 miles cycling in the last fortnight, dropped out after 15 miles.
