March 18th, 2007: Rome Marathon Report
Posted by Paul at 7:39 pmRead about Paul, Pawel and Simon’s adventures in Rome for the marathon below:
As for Rome, it’s a beautiful course, starting and finishing at the Colosseum, and passing the Circus Maximus, the Vatican (a quick wave to the Pope), the Spanish steps and Piazza Venezia, amongst other landmarks. But I’ve proved Oggie’s hypothesis that there’s only one long run in your legs (and it isn’t after a week’s skiing!).
Pawel strolled past me at 13 km, at which point we were both comfortably on for sub-3, but soon after and my legs are starting to tire. The trouble with kilometre markers is that 14 miles and you’re on your way home - 14 km and you’re only a third of the way in! The balloon man for 3 hours passed me just after half-way, followed by the balloons for 3-15. Simon Rosser uttered encouragement on his way past too. When the balloons for 3-30 reached me just after 40 km, pride finally overcame knackeredness, and I sprinted (well, the onlookers may have said “hobbled”) across the line.
Key results:-
…1 02:09:36 Chelimo Kemboi (Kenya)
.946 03:14:02 Simon Rosser
1466 03:22:49 Pawel Bal
2038 03:29:34 Paul Mitchell
Interestingly, (the winner aside) the finishing order above was in reverse of the position at 10km!
Regards,
Paul
